George Monize “Uncle George”, loving husband, father of two children and grandfather of four passed away on Wednesday April 2nd, 2025 at age 79.
George was born on December 12th, 1945 in Two Friends Village, East Coast Demerara, Guyana to John and Lydia Monize. He attended Guyana Government Technical Institute, and emigrated to Canada on January 28th, 1968. Once in Canada he furthered his education attending George Brown College and Ryerson Institute where he furthered his technical drawing skills. These skills afforded him the opportunity to be instrumental in building York Barbell Company. He was the General Manager at York Barbell for more than 45 years in Oakville, Ontario Canada.
On September 26th, 1970 he married Elizabeth Kay (nee Rogers). They raised a son and daughter, George Michael and Kristal Elizabeth.
George had a tremendous love for family and an extremely generous nature, always doing for others first. He also loved to build things, whether a mechanical contraption, a house or a kite – he was an industrious man. His candor, humor, and generosity will be greatly missed.
George was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Kay Monize, and his parents John and Lydia Monize. He is survived by his two children, George (Anita) and Kristal and his grandchildren, Gabriella, Carmen, Savannah and Lillian. Siblings Bernard, Patricia, Amy (Deceased), Cecelia (Deceased), John, Joseph (Deceased), Francis, Myrna and many many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews.
George’s kindness, steady presence, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit remains a guiding light for his family.
