In a collaborative effort spearheaded by Manchester Trade, the Caribbean Policy Consortium, the University of Guyana Foundation, the Guyana Business Journal, and Florida International University, a symposium of significant import unfolded on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Nestled within the halls of Florida International University’s Washington DC facility, the symposium delved into the pressing theme of “Human Capital Training and Development – The University of Guyana at 60 in an Oil and Gas Economy.”
A diverse audience, comprising members of the Guyanese diaspora, friends of Guyana, and esteemed business professionals, gathered to partake in this pivotal discussion.
Dr. David Lewis, Vice President of Manchester Trade Limited Inc. and Co-Chair of the Caribbean Policy Center, took the helm as the event’s inaugural speaker, setting the tone for what promised to be a thought-provoking symposium. At the helm of the proceedings was Dr. Edward Greene, the esteemed Chancellor of the University of Guyana, who also skillfully undertook the role of moderator.

Dr. Hilary Landorf, Assistant Vice President of Global Learning Initiatives at FIU, eloquently introduced Florida International University and its contributions to the discourse.

Dr. Micharl Cheng, Dean of Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at FIU, delved into the captivating world of sustainable tourism and the lessons it holds for the University of Guyana.

The keynote address was delivered by none other than Professor Mohamed Martin, Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, who offered profound reflections on the future trajectory of UG.
Throughout the symposium, the attendees were treated to a wealth of information and insights, leaving them with much to ponder. Following the presentations, the floor was opened for audience engagement, with two individuals seizing the opportunity to share their thoughts and queries.
As the symposium drew to a close, Gabriel Cunje, Co-Convenor of the University of Guyana Foundation, ensured that the audience departed with a note of anticipation. He reminded them of the forthcoming UG Gala, scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 21, 2023 which will raise funds to accomplish the goals of the University of Guyana.
