Dr. Richard Cambridge Adviser to the Regional Vice President, African Diaspora Program at The World Bank

Richard Cambridge, a Guyanese national, joined the World Bank in 1973 through the Young Professionals Program. He was appointed to his current position, where he leads the Africa Region's work program with the Diaspora, in 2009.

Richard Cambridge, a Guyanese national, joined the World Bank in 1973 through the Young Professionals Program. He was appointed to his current position, where he leads the Africa Region's work program with the Diaspora, in 2009.

Richard's Bank career has spanned five regions and a variety of assignments, including: Personal Assistant to the Senior Vice President of the World Bank; Country Economist for Venezuela and Jamaica in the Latin America and Caribbean Region; Project Economist in Education and Human Development Divisions in the East Asia and Pacific, East Africa, and South Asia Regions; and in the Agriculture Division of the South Asia Region; and in the Population, Health and Nutrition Department of the Bank; Environment and Social Development Adviser in the Office of the Director, India, Nepal and Bhutan; as the Principal Operations Adviser for the South Asia Region, Operations Adviser, Africa Region, and as Acting Manager for the Capacity Development Unit in the Africa Region. During these assignments, Richard gained extensive operational experience, serving as Project Economist on eleven investment projects, and as Task Team Leader for twenty investment and development policy lending operations across a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, human development, infrastructure, environment and public administration.

Prior to joining the World Bank, Richard worked as a junior economist in the Treasury Department and taught history and economics at the Queen's College in Guyana. Other positions include Assistant Director of Admissions at Macalester College in Minnesota; Teaching Assistant at the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Bologna, Italy; and Research positions for Mark Battle Associates, International Consultants, Washington D.C.; and Research Analyst, Presidential Commission on USA National Materials Policy, Washington D.C.

Richard has an MA in International Relations; and a PhD in International Economics and Politics from SAIS at Johns Hopkins University. He has also studied at the UN Graduate Study Program in Geneva, Stanford University Graduate School of Education; and has been a Visiting Scholar at Kennedy School of Government and the Division of Applied Sciences, Harvard University.
