New York, July 18, 2014 – Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc. (GCA) is inviting Guyanese at home and in the diaspora to take time over the weekend to submit nominations for the 2014 Awards. The annual Awards Ceremony launches the Folk Festival season.
New York, July 18, 2014 – Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc. (GCA) is inviting Guyanese at home and in the diaspora to take time over the weekend to submit nominations for the 2014 Awards. The annual Awards Ceremony launches the Folk Festival season. The theme for the 2014 Folk Festival season is “We Bridgin …” To this end, all of the events on the 2014 Folk Festival calendar will serve as bridges to strengthen relationships between diaspora and homeland, to connect generations, and to continue to provide family-friendly spaces for enjoying Guyana’s heritage and creativity.
At the Awards Ceremony, scheduled for August 27, 2014 at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall, New York, GCA will recognize those individuals and organizations whose work has contributed to bridging Guyana’s ethnic divide, encouraging trust, and promoting national pride. The awards are:
- Guyana Cultural Association Award
- Guyana Cultural Association Award-Youth
- Guyana Cultural Association Exemplary Award
- Guyana Cultural Association Lifetime Achievement Award
- The Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism
For more than a decade, GCA has been honoring individuals and organizations whose contributions to Guyanese life have been characterized by originality, pioneering spirit, and tenacity in the face of challenges.
Their contributions have also been wide in scope and influence. Among the awardees over the years have been Dave Martins, the late Basil Rodrigues, Colin “Bumble” Wharton, Magda Pollard, and Donna Ramsammy-James. This year a new award is introduced—the Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism. It is inspired by Godfrey Chin’s indefatigable efforts to study and to celebrate Guyana’s rich cultural heritage and creativity.
The prize has been established to encourage and to reward writers whose published works promote understanding and appreciation of the diverse strands of Guyanese heritage and contribute to celebrating the commonalities that connect the people of Guyana.

As GCA’s Awards Committee Chair Ronald Lammy recently observed, “Participation in the nomination process is an important contribution to identifying and celebrating individuals and organizations whose initiatives were inspired by Guyana’s rich multi-ethnic heritage and have contributed to the improvement of inter-ethnic dialogue at home and in the Diaspora.”
